On my faith journey

I continually ask, “Why do church? Wouldn’t it be easier to travel on my own, listening to my own drummer?” This past Saturday presented me and, I hope others, with some time and space to help answer these questions. I do church to gift the possibility of experiencing the joy with which the Spirit enlivens me.

Life is lived in an environment full of encumbrances. The best life that God planned for us is often hidden in this mire of the unchosen. This Saturday at Touch-A-Truck, we at St. Joseph gave the community, ourselves included, a morning of encumbrance free time.

The parents did not have to do any planning to give their family a chance to have a fun time together, other than getting everyone into the car on time. The children did not have to behave like angels. And we did not have to find the money to purchase the cool vehicles. To feel the Spirit that resides at St. Joseph, all the parents, the children, and the parishioners had to do was show-up.

When we show-up and allow ourselves to be transformed by the Spirit, we will discover joy. How do I know this? I heard it in the giggles of the children as they explored the event. I saw it in the smiles of the parents as they captured amazing pictures. I felt it in my sweaty shirt created from preparing the space.

I do church, because I have faith that the Spirit will help me experience joy while doing so. I do church at St. Joseph because it is fun to do it with all the family members who live here.

With Thanks,

Peter
