Are we missing something?

I ask this as I remember that we are trinitarians. During this Easter season, just completed, we have acknowledged this each Sunday as we reaffirm our baptismal covenant. I believe in God, I believe in Jesus Christ, and I believe in the Holy Spirit.

It is the relationship with this mystery of the unity of these three in one that brings energy to our faith. Because they are essential, they are intertwined throughout our worship service and our Christian life.

Often when important milestones are past, we throw a party in recognition. We prepare for Jesus Christ entering the human experience for a month of Advent, and we celebrated it with Christmas and Christmastide. A party time of pine decorations, special music, and gift giving. We prepare for Jesus Christ to leave the human experience and join with the Father in heaven. During 40 days of Lent we ready ourselves for the physical loss of his company. At the resurrection, the sadness turns to joy on Easter day as the Son returns to the Father. Another party with lilies, fanfare music, and children hunting for candy-eggs. Two beliefs, two parties.

Where is the third? We experience an amazing mystery during Eastertide. Knowing the fragile nature of the human condition, Christ lingers among His believers and followers before joining with the Father. As He does so, He breathes his gift into the human condition. The gift of never-ending relationship. A relationship that is available to anyone and everyone. All we have to do is say, “Yes.” The Holy Spirit is in us. Alleluia!

We just marked the giving of this gift on Pentecost Sunday. So, where is the party? It is coming, but it is different than the ones with balloons, cake, and gifts to open. This party is so special that it lasts for 6 or 7 months. For it is in this time, we get to celebrate every day that we are unified with the Holy Spirit. In the days after the gift of His breath, we can live with hope, peace, joy, and love in ordinary time.

We are not missing anything, because God, the Father, Jesus Christ, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is with us always.

Humbly,

Peter
